7pm: The JazzED Series–“Crime Jazz,” a musical lecture featuring Anchorage Jazz Ensemble and Monica Lettner
October 26, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

As part of the monthly JazzED Series
Spenard Jazz Fest presents
A Musical Lecture on CRIME JAZZ
Featuring members of the
Anchorage Jazz Ensemble and vocalist Monica Lettner.
Curated by Karl Wilhelmi.
What is the sound of a musical gunshot?
What 17th-century opera inspired a best-selling song about a contract killer?
Is the flatted fifth really the ‘devil in music?’
A simple question about a mother’s odd ramblings leads to an exploration of crime in jazz and the artists who used their talents to explore the dark and often lurid world that is created through the interaction of music, words and images.
“Crime Jazz” is presented as part of a monthly musical series about Jazz by The Spenard Jazz Festival,
a 501c3 non-profit organization that promotes Jazz in Alaska.
Our next “JazzED” presentation will be on November 16,
With Michael Dickerson examining “Moral Progress in Jazz: Attitudes towards Women”
Admission: $5
